Buried under maybe 20,000 excess words is a five-star book struggling to come out.The basic premise is interesting (especially for a reviewer who has just started ballroom and Latin classes, and is itching to lug her backpack around Latin America one day); the information is there - about the dancing, the food, the history etc, and the writing is articulate and evocative (and, if I remember rightly, typo free - considering I've spotted typos even in 'serious ' books by supposedly reputable university presses, that's hugely impressive).However, as a previous reviewer said, it is a bit repetitive. Repetition may be good when it comes to learning a dance, but it's not the best way of keeping a reader's attention - as that previous reviewer illustrated. Their beef was that we had the same story repeated over and over again - author arrives in a city, starts to learn a dance, struggles to learn said dance then achieves some degree of competence. Me, I got really frustrated by the way the author would make some witty observation then repeat it but said in a different way, in the very next sentence, just in case we had missed it the first time. Those, to me anyway, were the words that could have gone, making the book move faster (and, thinking about the bottom line, cheaper to print). If those words had to be kept, maybe they could have been employed to say more about the dances themselves, perhaps, or about the place of dancing in Colombia? Yes, dancing is very popular, but, for example, exactly how common are the folk dances - are they taught in every school, or are they a minority pastime, as Morris dancing is in the UK?I'm in no way dissing this book. I enjoyed reading it, I learned from it, I was inspired by it, I'm glad it was published. I would certainly class it as 'better' than some of the massively-hyped ones published by mainstream publishing houses. But it could have been even better.
This book was very humorous in a witty style that I found absolutely charming.
Dancing Feat will spur feelings of both wanderlust and dancerlust (new word I just made up that means "will make you want to dance"). I know I'm biased because Neil is a friend, but I highly recommend this book to travelers (and/or dancers). Especially, of course, for prospective travelers to Colombia.
I love this book!!! It keeps you Reading, has a lot of humor and he discribes Colombia and her amazing people exacly how they are! Hope this book soon will come OUT in spanish because i would love to give it to my colombian dance teachers!!!
What a great book! Much better than the usual Kindle cheapies. Thoroughly recommended if you're interested in dance or Colombia, but also very funny book in it's own right if you like the British style of self deprecating humour
Reading this book made me want to quit my job and travel to Columbia to experience the joy, laughter, smells and taste of this country! :)

Really enjoyed this one. Learned a lot about Colombian dance and history between laughing and rolling my eyes to all the geeky humor. Best of all though, is Neil's description of "the process." Trying to gain competence in something you suck at is a humbling and frustrating experience, and he captures that experience perfectly here. And in the end, I found it very inspiring as he emerged a much more self-assured person, on the dance floor and off. Makes me want to head to Colombia and give this dancing lark a try myself!
