David Sloane is a powerful attorney with an excellent track record who specializes in cases involving wrongful deaths. Just as he has finished winning a multi-million dollar case, he is approached by a referred client regarding the death of her husband who died while serving with the National Guard in Iraq. She wants to sue the government because she believes that her husband's bulletproof armor failed to do its job. Unfortunately there is not much that Sloane can do. The US government is protected by a Supreme Court decision, the Feres Doctrine, that states that the United States is not liable for injuries sustained by soldiers on active duty, even as the result of negligence of others in the armed forces. Sloane is not a man so easily deterred, and he's always up for a challenge. He will find a way to help his new client. Unfortunately, there is more to the story as persons unknown threaten him and his family. Sloane did not get to where he is by giving up easily. He will put up a fight and do right for his client regardless of the cost. The concept here is interesting and serves as a good way to learn a bit regarding military law and the Feres Doctrine, but it does not work well as an action or legal thriller. There are too many pieces involved inside the story and each one is dealt independently from each other - his investigation, the threats against his family, and the opposing arguments in the legal issue. Readers figure that it all goes together since they are all taking place in the same book but it just seems disjointed. Each issue is dealt separately. It is almost like a video game in that readers can only get to the next level in the game only after all the elements in the previous level have been achieved. One cannot move forward until the last level is fully complete. It is how I felt while reading the novel. The other issue is that the author does not play fair with the readers regarding the progression of the story. There are unexpected flashbacks; characters appearing out of nowhere that bring an important piece to the puzzle, unconvincing plot twists, and several unnecessary contrivances (such as the behavior of the dead serviceman's children) whose only purpose is to pull heartstrings. It might make an interesting movie of the week, but as a legal thriller, it falls short.

Sloane takes on the US military and the seemingly insurmountable Feres Doctrine. The Fares,Doctrine makes it nearly impossible to sue the US government when a soldier is is killed incident to his/her service. As usual, Dugoni develops the characters to the point that you know each of them personally. The story centers on a soldier, Ford, who is killed in action in Iraq. Things are,not as they appear, however, and Sloane, along with his best friend Charles Jenkins set out to untangle the truth of what really happened and to brimg justice for Fords family. You will sit up late at night turing pages frantically to find out what happens next. Kudos Mr. Dugoni for another, great story.

This is an engaging legal story, but what makes it so interesting is the investigative means that lead to the courtroom. David Sloane is a man overcome with a cause that will put him up against compelling legal precedent and against forces of greed and corruption. The novel succeeds as a thriller because the reader fears for Sloane and his family as the forces against him steadily murder any obstacles before them. The military story was very well done and the misdirection was superb. I was surprised by the culprits. My only criticism deals with the back story of Sloane's youth, and of P.I.Jenkins' involvement in it. That was a distraction and the author does not clearly expose the sordid affair well enough-at least for me.

As the title suggests, this book involves government and military issues after a former soldier's family are denied all of their benefits. The main character, an attorney representing the family, immediately discovers that this will be a difficult case. However, he doesn't foresee the personal involvement and danger which moves onto his own family as a result of the lawsuit. The story begins calmly but escalates quickly into a book that explores the motives and dangers one can encounter at home as well as at war. It sparks outrage at ideas people accept and expect--only to discover deception at every corner. I was impressed with the author's research and knowledge into a complex topic. His characters were not only believable, but they revealed weaknesses and faults that still made you cheer them on...and forgive some of them. This is a top-notch read, and I will look for other books by this author.

Dugoni has done it again. This is a sound book, filled with well drawn characters and many facts about the realities of war that I never wanted to know. It is meticulously plotted. There's also some terrific court room scenes. And the ending! It blew me away. Between David Sloane and Tracy Crosswhite, Robert Dugoni is becoming one of my favorite authors.

This series is fun and engaging. Sloan little by little becomes a complete character, including history, as do the other main characters. They get into a serious issue with the american military. Thought provoking when you've had no experience with benefits of soldiers who died fighting for the country.
