Natural Rest for Addiction: A Radical Approach to Recovery Through Mindfulness and Awareness, by Scott Kiloby

Review

“We’re all born with a beautiful mind, but without the owner’s manual for operating it! Scott Kiloby’s latest book, Natural Rest for Addiction, is the owner’s manual we’re all yearning to possess. Through simple, direct, and flawless instruction, Kiloby shows us how to navigate difficult emotions, obsessive thoughts, and addictive behaviors. And he exquisitely reveals how to experience our natural state of wholeness—which is already present, but so often misunderstood—in which true and lasting healing is present. I deeply appreciate Kiloby’s wise counsel that shows how lasting healing and true health can unfold, no matter our circumstances, through simply learning to rest in our natural wholeness.” —Richard Miller, PhD, clinical psychologist, president of the Integrative Restoration Institute (www.irest.us), and author of The iRest Program for Healing PTSD“Scott Kiloby has married deep spiritual insight with practical, doable tools to create a truly new paradigm in recovery. Using the Natural Rest method and the Compulsion Inquiry can bring about profound transformation even in addiction, usually one of the most intractable human challenges.” —Fiona Robertson, senior facilitator and trainer of Scott Kiloby’s Living Inquiries, and author of The Art of Finding Yourself“In Natural Rest for Addiction, Scott Kiloby brings his refined practice of present-moment awareness to the healing of addictions and other compulsions, teaching a gentle but deep self-inquiry whose ultimate goal is liberation.”—Gabor Maté, MD, author of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, and cofounder of Compassion4Addiction (www.compassion4addiction.org)“Scott Kiloby’s book Natural Rest for Addiction is one of the best books for treating all types of addiction. He gives us an honest and clear understanding of the root of the urges and craving that we all know. Scott gives us not only hope for a cure from the symptoms of anxiety, trauma, and depression, but a step-by-step guide to freedom from them. This book teaches us a form of non-dual mindfulness which allows us to discover our deeper nature of well-being that is already okay with everything as it is. Highly recommended!” —Loch Kelly, author of Shift Into Freedom“Kiloby has found that mindfulness training can help anyone struggling with addiction to kick their habit by teaching them how to stay in the present moment. He explains that by naturally resting in a state of presence, one stops looking to the future for ultimate satisfaction. The author offers strategies and exercises that can help combat cravings, encourage positive feelings, and listen fully to what others are saying. Kiloby delves into dissolving physical body contractions, or blockages of energy/repressed emotions, so that true transformation may be achieved and there’s no possibility of falling back into the addictive cycle. Kiloby’s practical and innovative skills will undoubtedly benefit anyone caught in a cycle of addiction, anxiety, or depression. Recommended.” —Library Journal

It's really too soon for me to say "Whoopee!" And I admit that some days I am not diligent in "resting." Life gets in the way and resistance is always lurking to sabotage my good intentions. The practice is simple and easy but you've got to do it. And the more you do it, the better and easier it gets. Read it and then read it again. Yes, it is repetitious but we need to have this simple method pounded into our hard heads. Besides, the repetition is not annoying or tedious: It's all good.I love Frank Kinslow's books about Quantum Entrainment but Scott Kiloby is offering us an easier way to do the same thing. Do it diligently and I think you'll find that you can "fix" much more than any addiction you may have. And remember that we can have addictions to cocaine or computers, to soft drinks or soft porn -- the list is endless.

Fantastic book! Get this book if you suffer from addictions, trauma, or from anything. That's right; anything. This is the way to end suffering. Scott has masterfully combined somatic practices, non-dual awareness, mindfulness, and other modalities in experiential exercises to release the bodily held blockages to a felt sense of well-being (non-suffering). This is not conceptual, which would be just more theory and thinking. It's the actual experiences resulting from the exercises in the book that create change at the core level. Scott clearly says that this work is not easy and it's not a quick-fix. It takes work over a period of time to realize the results. My journey in recovery from addiction and trauma has followed this same path, but I didn't have a map like this book. Over the past twelve years, I've followed a path of exploration and experimentation that has included all of these elements and others. Although I've reached a place where I can say that I've recovered, had I found this book and applied what it teaches, I probably would have saved years of experimentation.

Beyond an explanation, the book is like a gentle trance with repetition helping you learn the ideas as you go. Almost too simple like so many amazing healing modalities. I use the ideas in my hypnotherapy and career counseling practice and have seen wonderful results.

All I can say is that I don't drink anymore. I was drinking a lot and after reading Scott's book and following the very simple directions I don't drink anymore. It didn't happen all at once but with continued resting and inquiry it all fell away. The drinking just fell away. I didn't have to quit or stop or white knuckle it. It just isn't an issue in my life anymore. It also worked with candy and bread. I forget that I even want a drink or candy or bread. Simply amazing! Thank you Scott!!

I purchased this book and sent it to a friend in jail that struggles with meth addiction. It is the only thing he has come across that has spurred him to want to change the way he thinks. He has been in and out of the system that has only offered the same approach to treating addictions year after year and he thinks he is smarter than their tools, so it has never worked for him. This is a different and more gentle philosophy that encourages one to learn new techniques in becoming aware of their thought processes and triggers. I am really excited to see positive, authentic changes in his behaviors due to a change in his thoughts.

Are there other approaches to addiction? Yes. Scott Kiloby offers one. For this interested in a "direct path"...OK there is no path...approach to spirituality here is an approach to addiction that fits.

Scott Kiloby writes so clearly most anyone can understand and experience the subject matter he is pointing too. I have been to a week long retreat at the Kiloby center in Palm Springs and the experience was exceptional. Scott is very thorough when sharing his own life experience with recovery. Scott and staff are the most loving, caring, and unassuming group of people you will ever meet. I have spent many years with different 12 step programs, inquiry, and self help books. Scott's Natural Rest is a tool that works, and is a tool we all already have we just need to notice it is with us no matter what our addiction or struggle. Thank YOU Scott for all your books, and the love you share with all people. Thank you Chad and Marina also. Get the book and get started.

The second time I read this book was even better. I read it as Scott recommended - one sentence or two and contemplate. That way - each sentence felt like holding a pearl in my hand. The source of all addictions - are thoughts themselves. We are addicted to our thinking before and after the rest of our addictions. What is unique and special about this book and Scott's work - It is strongly related to the energies in the body too - so, not just working the mind. Resting with this book had made it easy and clear and clearly shows the way to overcome addictions of any kind. I strongly recommend this book to you too. I love that you read it slowly. Hope that you let yourself take it in. Live it rather than read it.
