What Jesus Saw from the Cross, by A. G. Sertillanges

Review

What Jesus Saw From The Cross is an unabashedly devotional work, written largely to deepen the Lenten meditations of the Christian faithful. Yet it relies heavily on findings of archaeologists and historians to refine (and at times correct) the image of Jesus familiar from 2000 years of tradition. If Sertillanges' method contradicts legend and tradition regarding the death of Jesus, it agrees perfectly with biblical accounts. Sertillanges (an acclaimed scholar and Catholic Priest) finds historical precedents for such events as the soldiers dressing Jesus as a mock king and casting lots for his clothes. Originally published in 1930, What Jesus Saw From The Cross is a time-lost classic deservedly brought back into print for a new generation of grateful readers. --Midwest Book Review

From the Inside Flap

Never has there been spiritual reading as powerful as What Jesus Saw from the Cross, the book that will intensify your love of Jesus by burning the events of His Passion into your memory and imagination. Written early in this century by Rev. A. G. Sertillanges, a priest who lived in Jerusalem, this acclaimed devotional classic gives you vivid and dramatic details not included in the Gospel: With Jesus, you'll be jostled by crowds as you enter Jerusalem, choke on the dust of the narrow streets, experience the exotic oriental smells of the city at festival time, share the Last Supper with the disciples, stare into the face of Jesus' accusers, and be there as He dies on the Cross. Do you remember when Jesus begged His disciples to "watch one hour" with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane? With this book, you can watch not just one but many hours with Jesus. Read it slowly and prayerfully. The vivid details and the gripping narrative will soon take over: you'll find yourself engaged in a personal retreat, an interior pilgrimage, and a profound meditation on the love and sufferings of Jesus on the Cross.

It was so moving. The perfect book to read over the course of Lent. It gave me a totally new perspective on the Passion and Death of Jesus. Hard to read at times because it made me realize the part my sins have played in the necessity of Him having to redeem all of us by such a gift. Sometimes it's too easy to blame those who were alive at the time and forget our part in it. At one time or other I believe we have all yelled "Crucify Him" by our thoughts and/or actions. I feel an even deeper gratitude for this gift of Salvation as this book really brought it home to me.

Requires very quiet, contemplative reading. Fr. Sertillanges explores or tries to explore Christ's vision as the God-man from the cross, not just the more 21st century version - the Suffering Servant.

I'll admit that it was tough getting through the first few chapters. It was wordy and hard to understand. I was ready to give up but kept at it because I was reading this for a book club. I'm so glad I stuck it out because once I got into it, I was often moved to tears by the descriptions of Christ's suffering and that of the people who knew and loved him while he was on earth. This was originally written in French in 1930 and was translated into English. That may explain some of the difficulty with the wording in the beginning. I encourage you to get through the first part if you're struggling to read this book. You will be rewarded by beautiful imagery and a better understanding of Christ's sacrifice and how this affected those around Him.

I have found this different method of covering the crucifixion of Jesus very helpful in getting a better understanding of the pain suffered by Jesus. His agony caused by the vicious abuse heaped on Him by His tormentors was extreme. It is a wonder that He survived the abuse to make it to the actual crucifixion. Anyone who reads this book will be grief stricken over our Lord's suffering for us. It was caused by the sins of all of us.

Father A. G. Sertillanges lived in the Jerusalem area for many years. Because of his knowledge of landmarks, he places the reader into the eyes of Jesus as they sweep over the Jerusalem landscape from His vantage point on the Cross. As His eyes touch on the individual points of interest such as the Cenacle (sight of the Last Supper) Fr. Sertilanges has Jesus recall the events that have taken place and the words that were said in that spot. He draws upon the Gospels and also his own imagination of what Jesus is thinking as He recalls each event. It is truly a remarkable way of looking at the last days of Jesus and His last hours on the Cross. I read this book as part of my Lenten devotions for 2014 but think it would be beneficial to anyone seeking to strengthen their faith at any time of the year. It would also be a great book to be read by a Scriptural book club. It has my most highest recommendation.

Reading this book gave me a whole different perspective on the crucifiction! Eye-opening and inspiring! Felt the humanness of Jesus in His love and forgiveness for people. The first chapter was difficult to get through though, glad I persevered.

One of my favorite books, a unique perspective of what Jesus saw from His Cross and what thoughts he may of have. Sertillanges is a gifted writer and has mystical insight, for a person way below his intelligence he wrote so even I can have deeper thoughts, a wonderful book

Fr. Sertillanges not only brings to life the last hours of Jesus' life, but he does so in language that rises to the poetic. This is a perfect book to read during Lent to help us see Jesus' sacrifice for us as He might have seen it through His eyes.
