It goes into a lot of detail that will require multiple reads to comprehend. I am a beginner and this book will be a great reference. I plan to re-read it a few times after some driver education events to continue to understand all of the content.

I purchased Going Faster! to learn more about racing. I purchased it based on all of the positive comments about the diagrams and theoretical explanations that make sense. I agree completely with this reviews. There is a lot of discussion and real-world examples. However, the book seems very dated. The author uses Sebring's course as the main focus of the exercises. For those that haven't driven at Sebring, it can be confusing. In addition, the racing classes and car examples are also pretty dated. The Taurus SHO was used as a showroom stock example, and this is not to be confused with the new 2010-up Ford Taurus SHO. The SHO referenced in the book is the FWD-based Ford Taurus with the Yamaha V8 engine. In addition, the author admitted that they did not have any experience with AWD (all-wheel drive) vehicles, which have become very prevalent since 2000. Many supercars and sports cars now feature AWD, from Porsche 911s, Lamborghini Gallardo, Audi R8, the new 2010 Taurus SHO, Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, to the Lamborghini Murcielago. The way the authors spoke of AWD made it seem like AWD was some alien and mystical technology. Most of the strategies apply to RWD cars, and that was fine for me since I grew up driving RWD/V8 vehicles. I became interested in FWD and AWD at a later stage and I don't have a bias towards any drivetrain setup. Each of these have their merits and drawbacks, and I was more interested in learning the fundamentals in racing. This book covers the basics up to just enough information to make it very expensive (getting into the different classes, buying the equipment, etc...) but there's not many how-to's on how to mitigate problems like brake fade. There are other books for subjects like that!Pros: Easy to read, very concise topics, great way to get into racing techniques.Cons: Dated materials and examples. Sebring is the only track the author writes about. AWD isn't covered, FWD does have some coverage. The cars mentioned in the book are also very dated.Overall: 4/5 stars

Great structure and flow. Gives great advice on how to learn from the book and reasons for what comes first and last.Great explanations, diagrams, and scenarios.Overall great.I already knew at least half of the topics discussed relatively well, but the great analysis and step by step walkthrough of each scenario greatly strengthened my knowledge in every way and gave me better discipline on what I should be focusing on during the race.It definitely played a part in my progression from ~29 seconds to ~27.5 seconds a lap.-Casual go-karting in sd

I couldn't "swallow" this book at once, it took me three sessions during a couple of months to figure out that amongst the good books on motor sports this one serves the role of a guidebook, of a manual of a beginning competition driver, best of all. What do I mean by "good books"? Competition Driving by Alain Prost, The Technique of Motor Racing by Piero Taruffi, Driving in Competition by Alan Johnson, Sports Car and Competition Driving by Paul Frere, to name a few. All of them are wise and not overcomplicated, and have no buzz about the success stories of champions, the buzz which is useless for the reader interested in driving techniques.I've found out that the definition of oversteer and understeer here is the most complete and most correct amongst the books that I've listed, yet without the formulas that may frighten somebody. It took the author 17 pages full of illustrations to explain these modes of car behaviour. This is the first big advantage of this book.Another major advantage of this book is the serious attention of the author to the role of hardware, which is sometimes overlooked by the other writers, who claim that hardware is important, but do not write in-depth chapters about it. The book has may illustrations and explanations how the center of gravity, wheel base, and the suspension elements like springs, shock absorbers and the roll bars affect longitudal and lateral load transfer speed and motion, which occurs during acceleration, braking and cornering; how various adjustment affect the weight applied to each of the wheels, and how this affects car behaviour. He is the only author to mention the effect of download on coefficient of friction of the wheel, and why the total friction of the wheels is at its highest level when the download on each wheel is the same, i.e. the car is balanced. The other writers in this case did only mention that to keep the car balanced is important without a sound explanation. The book has an appendix with the listing of racing resources, it has a good bibliography and a useful glossary and an index.I highly recommend this book, although sometimes I had a feeling that more humour and liveliness would have made it even better. Please also consider buying "Skip Barber - Going Faster" DVD in addition to this book.

I bought this book to help me get better laps times in GTR 2. GTR 2 is such a realistic simulation that arcade driving techniques just don't work. This book is absolutely amazing. It covers every possible detail---maintaining traction in corners, braking and cornering strategies and techniques, spin prevention and recovery, etc. By applying the lessons in this book, I have greatly improved lap times in GTR 2, and I also have a greater understanding of the physics and planning involved in modern racing. The level of detail in this book is astounding. No details are left out. In the chapter covering shifting, they explain in detail why you should blip the throttle when downshifting, including the effect that blipping the throttle has on the engine, transmission, and grip at the rear wheels. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in automobile racing.
