Spiritual Envy: An AgnosticÂ’s Quest, by Michael Krasny

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. The contention between the "new" atheists and the devout is causing a resurgence in agnostic studies. Krasny (Off Mike) is a public radio host and a self-declared agnostic, maintaining a position that "stands open to verification of either side of the God question." Deftly balancing biography and literary scholarship, the book is both a personal examination of agnosticism and a balanced voice in the complex debate over faith's role in society. Krasny grew up a strong believer in his Jewish faith, until adolescent questioning led him to declare he just wasn't sure. Despite a lost connection with God, the young Krasny continued to seek a divine presence, even admitting to feelings of envy toward those possessing "the consolation of faith." In this book, agnosticism is a tool to philosophically engage with various manifestations of faith including organized religion, spiritual-but-not-religious sentiments, and even paranormal theories. Readers expecting a late chapter conversion will be disappointed; Krasny remains agnostic to the end, even while declaring his respect for the benefits religion can bring to believers. (Oct.) From Booklist

Books by agnostics about their agnosticism (unlike the prolific atheists) are anything but a dime a dozen. In fact, Krasny’s latest is one of only a dozen or so published this century. Krasny may be a university professor, but he doesn’t address his questions as an academic. He explores agnosticism the way he explores topics on his daily NPR show—in a thoughtful, informed, and almost conversational tone. The main difference is this isnt just any issue; it’s Krasny’s own story. The author’s honesty begins with the book’s title. He obviously envies the feelings of peace and comfort that people of faith experience. Keeping him from it, though, are innumerable questions. The book presents these ruminations with only hints to the answers. The questions involve issues like the Ten Commandments, God’s existence, evil, and tolerance. Along the way, Krasny brings many people into the conversation—fellow agnostics like Thomas Huxley, atheists like Richard Dawkins, and even biblical characters like Job. The author’s nondogmatic stance will please virtually all readers. --Wade Osburn

Michael Krasny is an extremely gifted writer who takes on the most difficult questions we can ask about life. He weaves literature of the ages and his own life search for answers into an easy to read search for answers. Many of us have asked the same questions, have experienced the same doubts about the "answers," and he makes us realize that each person has to search for his/her own answer. Some of us are still searching, but he helps us define the questions. I recommend this book as one of the most important books we can read for our own search: Does God exist? Yes or no: How do we know? Who or what is God? Why or why not? While these are hard questions he explores, it is not "heavy" reading, but a life's adventure story. Alan Jay Rom

Michael Krasny was a gifted writer in college, where I knew him, and has continued to use his gifts to educate and entertain his readers. I can imagine that he does the same with his students. This book examines the most difficult of issues we grapple with in stories and forces each of us to place ourselves in his shoes. It is the most thoughtful treatment about the source of our existence.

Although much of what people such as Richard Dawkins write about both the inaccuracies and horrors of organized religions is correct, I am one of those people--I suspect we are a clear minority--who see no purpose in maligning what others believe as long as those people are not doing horrid things to others. I think Jesus is just about the most perfect model of what a compassionate human being can be. But I cannot accept that he is literally God. So I look for books that provide insights that others have had. And this is one of those books. The beginning chapters are not as engaging as the last ones. Dr. Krasny, a college literature professor, has spent his life as most of us do trying to come to some type of "conclusion" about the meaning of life, about God (or god or no god), about the soul... And unlike a majority of Americans who conclude that there is a life after death for those who follow the righteous path of whichever Christian denomination they have chosen, Michael Krasny cannot accept any of that because none of it can be proven. In other words, like me, he is not willing to go on that thing called "faith." And what he has experienced, on the whole, is similar to what I have as well. So I guess you might say he only helped confirm what I already had concluded.I have been uncomfortable calling myself an atheist. But I have no problems saying I am an agnostic. And now I am going to pass this book on to a Presbyterian minister who is very, very certain of his beliefs. But he saw me reading it and said he would be intereted.

The breath of Krasny’s research, the depth of his curiosity and his searing personal honesty make this a compelling reading.I found it challenging me in places, making me laugh in others and it avoided that strident nastiness that has become a feature of authors like Richard Dawkins.Well worth reading!

The author's message was fine; the writing very boring. I couldn't finish it.

I thought the book was well thought out and very revealing about Mr. Kransy's life story and the spiritual beliefs and struggles to "find" god. The only complaint I would have(and this is probably more of a sign of my ignorance) is it seemed,in my opinion,he went to great lenghts to use words I had no idea what they were.I spent a lot of time in the dictionary.

Really speaks to me; excellent writing by a real professional. I recommend this book highly
