#2,803 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Before you read this book, you need to read the first book in the series: Black FlaggedSteven Konkoly writes a pretty darn good mystery / thriller, and I am glad I picked this one up. The author does a great job of getting you into the character's heads and what they are thinking, and the action is pretty much non-stop and not very many times where you will say "b.s." in terms of believablity from a layman's perspective. Similar to the first book in the series, this was one of those thrillers I couldn't put down. I'm looking forward to starting the next book in the series. As I type this review the Kindle version of this book is $2.99 - which makes this an outstanding value. Konkoly is better than most of the "name brand" thriller authors out there today: Vince Flynn an Lee Child, make way for Steven Konkoly!

This would be a very very good book for anyone who wants to know more about the dark side of international relations. One of my gripes about Nelson DeMille's "Charm School" is that it doesn't give us the bigger picture. Black Flagged Redux has a lot of bigger picture in it, indeed almost too much. I felt that I was overloaded with information and frequently I had to go back to clear up confusion in my mind. The book is extremely authentic. Steven Konkoly is a US Navy veteran and he used his time in service well, researching locations and learning how the intelligence bureaucracy fits together. Konkoly uses the intriguing approach of two branches of that bureaucracy working against each other. The novel is by an omnicscient third person and this causes huge problems. In the long conversations that feature in the first half of the book you don't know who is talking, because you can't keep track of so many point of view characters simultaneously. It's best to ignore the characters and read those scenes as if they were simply long expositions of detail. Most of the bureaucrats are cardboard cutouts anyway and completely interchangeable.Good action scenes are hard to write, because the writer can never keep up with real-time events, unlike in the movies. Konkoly does a very good job here. He also got into the head of Reznikov, the bad guy, very convincingly and I found myself sympathizing with him.Yes I realize that I'm suggesting the book should have been dumbed down but that's the way it is. There should have been more characters and fewer speaking heads. With a strong editor, I believe that Konkoly could have produced a true masterpiece here. It's still a very good read.

If you haven't read the first book in the series, you might want to do so before reading this one. There are elements in it that will give you a better understanding of the characters. In my opinion, this is a mixture of International Intrigue, Terrorism, Counter-terrorism, Military, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence Agency type of Thriller genres. The leader of a group of rogue "Warriors" has high hopes of one day being the civilian counterpart to the US Intelligence agencies. In the meantime, he must do what he can to keep money flowing and people trained or at top efficiency. A mission comes up that lands his operatives in the middle of a plot to turn normal citizens into something altogether different. Will the group succeed or will they be taken out of the picture? There is a lot going on in this story. To me, it shares some of the mindset of those in government positions, not necessarily only the US, who feel they have to have control over every aspect of an operation. Instead of working cooperatively for the good of the world, they choose to focus on "saving face". Meanwhile, the rogue warriors do what needs to get done despite the danger to them. Kind of made me stop and think.Warning: This story contains Violence as well as Adult Language and Situations not necessarily suitable for a younger audience.

This entire series and tie-ins with other novels by this author is an action packed series that you just can't put down. Despite knowing that I can close the book and finish the story tomorrow I found myself extremely reluctant to stop reading. Plenty of action, exotic places and situations, a diabolical renegade scientist who will eventually causes a major catastrophe despite everything this experienced and superbly trained team can do to stop him and his terrorist colleagues. I really enjoyed the entire series and I keep bumping into vague references to many of the characters and situations in other books making the entire series feel like reality instead of a series of fictional novels. Weapons and tactics are up to date and sensibly employed as they would be in real life. You won't be satisfied until you have read the entire series. . . and then you will want more.

Redux is the second book in the Black Flagged series. You can read this as a standalone. But each book builds on the previous storylines so I suggest you read them in order. There is a lot of violence. The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all of that info here. This is a fast paced action packed book. There are clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what will be revealed next. As usual, not everyone and everything is as it seems. I'm looking forward to reading more of these books.

This was one great action filled book from beginning to end. A believable scenario with lots of Spec Ops firefights. Surprisingly little sex or cursing to distract from the detailed story. Only complaint is that there is no end to the story in this book. To find out what happens next, you have to get the next kindle book, which isnt low cost. Since there is a book 3,4 & 5, I'm afraid you might never get to the end of this story. I would rather see an 800 page Thomas Clancy type book rathet than 5 separate books. Will probably wait for a Book Bub special to find out what happens next instead of laying out funds for the next three books.
