One of the most profoundly moving books I have EVER read. Witness the destruction of massive areas of WV over many years from the perspective of the people who live there and love and respect the land. No matter where you live, or what your position on mountaintop removal is, this book is a must-read in order to get a full picture. (Either that, or move there and live it.) Characters and events described so clearly you can feel them as if you are/were there. Poetic and brutal at the same time. In my 65 years, I have never had a book affect me as deeply as this. While I lament that it's likely too late to repair the damage done to the land; I pray it may be possible to stop any more.
Novels don't get much better than this one. It has what every unforgettable one should have: plot, characterization, language, history and, most of all, it has purpose. Even if you are not from Appalachia or truly familiar will the evils of mining and mountaintop removal, in particular, this story will raise your level of feelings a number of degrees. In my humble view, not since James Still has anyone written about Appalachia with the knowledge and emotion as has Ann Pancake. I finished the book a week or so ago and still can't get it out of my thoughts, nor do I believe I ever will and can barely wait to recommend it to family and friends; and Lace's last chapter, well, it measures up to any chapter on family I have ever read anywhere.. Yes, I am from W. Pennsylvania and sympathize with the culture and the cause, but first and foremost I RECOMMEND you read this book for its prose and its ultimate quality as contemporary literature of the very finest you will read.
I liked this novel mostly for its accurate painting of the destruction caused by mountaintop removal by coal miners. The marriage at the heart of the story is developed with authenticity. At times it was difficult to follow the characters' individual subplots, which didn't always contribute enough to the overarching themes or plot development. That said, it was a good read, one well worth your time. The writer obviously has talent, and I look forward to reading more of her work.
The more I read, the more this book gripped me. It is a heartbreaking read about people who love the land of their home, and one family's unsuccessful efforts to leave the polluted and dangerous mining town, only to return. What if you really have no choices in life? Give this book a chance, and I guarantee you will think about it for weeks after you read it. AND....you will realize how lucky you have it.
This is one of the hardest to read books I've ever struggled through. That said, it is brilliant and is so worth the struggle. Ann Pancake captured with razor sharp precision the thoughts and souls of her characters, characters who might be nearly impossible for outsiders to understand. It takes fortitude to stick with the dialogues and rambling trains of thought, but stick. You won't be sorry, and you will be rewarded with an amazing insight into a different world flooded with tribulations. And if you happen to be a local, well, you'll get it, and you will appreciate the strength of those who fight the good fight in the beleaguered hills of West Virginia.
One of the best books I've ever read, and the first book to begin to accurately record what it is to be young and female in Appalachia. This book will forever have a place on my bookshelf, and I hope it has a place on yours, as well. Thanks, Ann, for giving us a voice!
I found this book not an easy one to "get into"and not an easy one to just sit down and read through. Found it very revealing about life in the mining areas of the mountains of West Virginia as well of the effects of strip minning. Harsh reality. Not a feel good book.
Pancake is truly the female Shakespeare of Appalachia. Short stories that read like poems; yet flesh out the characters and give the reader a great insight of their inner selves. She depicts the state in all it's wonder and beauty; grayness and self-mutilation. Just as I recall it growing up there.
