What a thought provoking, well written book. I disagree with the reviewer that said it was boring. Far from it. I read the book in 3 days. It was enlightening ! And it inspires. We so need inspiration these days. Encouragement too. Thank you Xiuhtezcatl. Well done.
Amazing book by a 17 year old wise beyond his years. Climate change is the issue of our time. As we see and live through all of the insane storms (Katrina, Irene, Sandy, Harvey, Irma, flooding rains where it never flooded before, wildfires engulfing the west coast on a regular basis, etc). The author points out that there are many things an individual can do to lower their carbon footprint. We get our energy now from solar panels and we gave up meat and flying. I am trading my car in for an EV. It's time to stand up to the gov't and demand action that reduces emissions and sends on a path to clean energy. People's lives, OURS, literally depend upon it. If a 17 year old can do all he has done, surely the rest of us can do something too.
This book was the perfect finale on my journey from climate change ignorance, to awareness, to activism. My path from ignorance to awareness started when I read Jane Mayer’s “Dark Moneyâ€. Before that, I had googled “is climate change really that bad†a few times and clicked a few links until I found one that alleviated my fears and made me feel like it was nothing to worry about. After reading Dark Money, I now realize that anything I read or heard from “scientists†claiming Climate Change is nothing to worry about and/or is part of nature’s natural rise and fall of temperatures over time – these spokesmen, 100% of them, are being secretly paid by fossil fuel billionaires to spew this misinformation. Once a light bulb went off that I had been brainwashed by this propaganda, I went in search of more information. That’s when I read “Climate of Hopeâ€, written by Carl Pope and Michael Bloomberg. This book spelled out all the different contributors of climate change, as well as the many different challenges and solutions specific to each of the different problem sources. At this point in my reading, I am feeling panicked and helpless about what I could do about Climate change. Pope and Bloomberg’s book made me feel like they were “on it†– they were using their wealth and connections and business savvy and creative intelligence to do as much as they could to fight climate change. But they offered little advice as to what I, a mere working mother, could do to make a difference. I am a vegetarian who strives every day to minimize waste, conserve energy, etc, but this individual effort is not nearly enough to combat the pervasive culprits of climate change. So, right as I am feeling powerless about a problem I now know should rightfully scare me, I see an interview on The Daily Show with Xiuhtezcatk Martinez. I immediately ordered his book “We Rise†and started reading. I will say, the first 2 chapters had me yawning. This is a shame – a good book really needs to captivate its audience from the beginning – a reader is more tolerant of some less than exciting back story if they encounter it in the middle of the book vs. the beginning. However, I am very glad I kept reading. What this book offers, in addition to some eye opening information on environmental problems and their impact around the world, is that it finally offers a way (actually MANY ways) that a person like me can get involved and make a difference. Because of this book, I am writing letters to editors, I am calling my senators, I am donating to causes I learned about in this book. This book offered me a way to get involved that went beyond simply “sharing†or “liking†an article or politician statement on facebook regarding protecting the environment. And, this book got me thinking beyond just climate change and also to the irreversible and dangerous destruction of natural resource and wildlife (that I previously had not fully appreciated). I have never highlighted so many passages in a book before as I did in this book. Thanks to this book, I am now a member of CCL (Citizens Climate Lobby), and also following other orgs like 350.org, Rainforest Action Network, and NRDC. Thanks to CCL, I have called my senators to request that they support carbon fee and dividend legislation (this is a big deal for an introvert who has never called a senator before in my life). I have this book to thank for that.
I'm an older reader, but this young man talks a lot of good sense. The youth of the world should take heed of this book. Because they're going to inherit the world one day and the older generation needs this so we can salvage the health of the good Earth so the young can receive their birthright.
I buy a lot of books from Amazon and almost never review them. This one is important. Xiuhtezcatl Martinez is an inspiring person. His book is enlightening and terrifying and his voice is humble and unpretentious. Buy this book.
Authentic, inspiring, and brilliant. We need to hear more from kids, who of course will be the most impacted by climate breakdown. Xiuhtezcatl ('Shoe-Tez-Caht') has found his calling: inspiring his generation to rise. I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s an activist -- because what's an activist? -- he's just a very talented and self-actualized kid doing literally everything he can to fight for a livable planet.The book is rooted in Xiutezcatl's personal story, has tons of hints for inspiring action, and understands the importance of building an inclusive movement. Indeed, I’ve been kind of worried that the climate movement should stick with climate and not try to mix in “just transition,†but this book really got me thinking and now I see how important this is, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but to have a movement that’s actually effective. Let’s face it: the climate movement hasn’t exactly been effective up to now.We need a new kind of environmentalism that goes far beyond recycling. Listening to kids (and kids speaking up) is a huge part of that. Another huge part is listening to indigenous people. Xiutezcatl writes, “For a long time the climate movement was fractured and incomplete, leaving some of the most important stories on the sideline and unheard.†This book definitely helps, but we still have a ways to go.Finally, we also need to simply stop burning fossil fuels! When you're in a hole, stop digging. I’d love to see Xiuhtezcatl and other environmental leaders start saying “I’m just not going to burn this stuff any more.†(Xiuhtezcatl still flies in planes, for example, and he barely discusses the how or why of living daily life with less fossil fuel, which is kind of a huge part of the picture.) To that end, this book goes well with Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution by a climate scientist who radically cut his fossil fuel use and found it made life more satisfying for lots of reasons. The movement will get way stronger as more and more of us start to walk the talk.
